Miami, Puerto Rico and Bermuda are prime holiday destinations boasting sun, beaches and coral seas. But between these idyllic settings, there is a dark side: countless ships and planes have mysteriously gone missing in the one and a half million square miles of ocean separating them. About 60 years ago, the area was claiming about five planes every day and was nick named the Bermuda Triangle by a magazine in 1964. There are many theories on what could have happened to the hundreds of planes and ships that have disappeared into the depths of the Bermuda Triangle. One that I think is one of the more believable thoughts is that gas pockets busted and came up. A ship cannot float
on gas and that could swallow a ship in seconds. Planes that hit a gas pocket can also crash because of engine failure. Engine failure occurs when the gas gets up into the motor and it cannot run. Some people have theories that there are enormous squids or other huge creatures that grab ships and take them down. Others think there is some kind of time warp that captures the planes and ships and takes them to another dimension. They believe that if you fly in just the right spot that you could hit a swirling time warp that will take you into the future or past.

Is there not a very important lesson to learn from the “Virginia Tech Shootout” of the United States when a single person shot dead thirty two inmates before committing suicide? Was that person a naxalite, a fundamentalist or a terrorist i.e., an extremist in any sense of that term? He was just one of those outcasts who were deprived of interactions with the main stream.

There are socially, politically and economically deprived sections of people in every country. These deprived sections are the breeding grounds for such outcasts. Knowledgeable youngsters amongst the deprived revolt to get their rightful positions in the society. They are suppressed and humiliated by the wealthy dominating neighbors. The rulers, having no concern for their plight, put these revolts down with a heavy hand. Disgusted and demoralized by their woeful environment they leave their birth places and become outcasts.

It is these outcasts who eventually become the building blocks for extremism of every kind on this earth.

As birds of same feather flock together outcasts with typical deprivations come together. They are spotted and picked up by established groups and taken to their training centers. They are well received and made to feel at home by the seniors. They instantly become loyal cadres of these groups. By the time they complete their training they are impregnated with a missionary zeal and passion.

They vow to wipeout the establishment and bring in a system which guarantees an equitable status for all. They are ready to undergo any ordeal to make that change happen. Their own dear life seems insignificant and trivial compared to what they would achieve. Their belief that by dying in a battle against hypocritical rulers they attain martyrdom is unshakable.

The rulers have always been busy with more serious confrontations between themselves. Their budgetary allocations are inevitably increasing by leaps and bounds for defense. Their continued apathy and insensitive approach towards the problems of the deprived is resulting in a steady increase of outcasts year after year. The supply lines of human resource for every kind of extremism are thus getting stronger day by day. There can be no denial of the fact that if the present rate of birth of outcasts is allowed to continue for a few more years extremism would gain the potential to bring about the most disastrous terminal wars on earth.

A diametrically opposite approach and hence a mindset towards the deprived sections has to come about urgently. For this change to be effective and lasting it has to emerge from the very top. And there it is required to have the most passionate heart which is inclusive of every single human being born on this earth. Hence the ‘Heads of Nations,, forgetting all their mutual misunderstandings and joining hands, possibly under the auspices of the United Nations Organization, should come forward and examine the new scheme outlined herein which would certainly reverse the trend of extremism.

“Each member country volunteers a 10% cut in defense expense and to address the fund so generated to the cause of the deprived. Deprived sections and the kinds of deprivation they suffer are identified in each country. Actions are taken at the highest level to fulfill their needs and aspirations. The progress is reviewed every six months. Resources and expertise are pooled and re-allocated to ensure an equitable level of implementation of the scheme across the countries.”

A few years of implementation of this scheme would see that there are no more deprived sections anywhere, no outcasts are born and that extremism as a culture has just vanished.

Instead, treating them as born enemies and spending enormous resources to fight them with more lethal and destructive weapons will result in heavier losses of innocent lives on one hand and an increasing number of cadres becoming hardcore on the other. There will be a steady increase in the spread, frequency, intensity and sophistication of violent outbursts. The life of common man everywhere will become a nightmare. The citizens will press the governments for more stringent proactive actions against the extremists. The governments would become impatient and revengeful.

The Governments naturally feel that they have an upper hand in their battle against extremists and that they would ultimately win. They would be proved wrong on two counts. The extremists’ spirit of self sacrifice and the unpredictability of their operations can never be matched by the conventional armies and their methods. The Governments’ expansive forces and access to unlimited resources will be of little use under tricky situations. The entry of highly intelligent minds into extremism is now an accepted reality. The chances that this intelligentsia with the daredevil spirit of the hardcore would one day sneak and penetrate into one of those massive stockpiles of warfare and turn the table cannot be ruled out.

In the end, the extremists turned desperados and the rulers turned bravos will fight the most furious uncontrolled wars ever fought on earth, both sides having free access to all kinds of mass destructive weapons. Mankind would get caught in the crossfire and see its last days. The earth would get scorched beyond recognition.

Extremism is extreme violence due to extreme disgust. It cannot be met with another form of violence. Such blind reactions would only spiral the intensity of violence. The only way is to bring down the disgust by attending to the causes of disgust and to dissolve it with compassion and understanding. Where there is no disgust extremism has no place.

No single person, a group, a nation, an ideology, a religion or a race can be identified as responsible for the chaos in which the world now finds itself. It is all of us, every human being – of course not any other creature – is responsible. More powerful one is more responsibility lies on him. More powerful a nation is more responsibility lies on that nation. Hence there is no doubt that the highest- nay the total- responsibility lies on the shoulders of the Heads of powerful nations. They have failed to lead the rest in the proper direction. Now it is they who have got to take the lead in seeing the world in a new light.

Man became unkind and aggressive when he started dividing the otherwise peaceful society on the basis of religion and ideology. Though every one of them did come up with laudable intentions of making the man kind and helpful the divisions by themselves created mistrust, intolerance and antagonism. These disintegrating thoughts carried on for hundreds of years through innumerable generations have made the minds of the present man severely conditioned. All his present actions are only reactions of this conditioned mind to the events around him. There is no original, meaningful, trend changing action evolving out of him. With the kind of fragmented, conditioned mind he is unable to solve complex problems related to the total mankind. His actions are only getting retaliated by others with more furious reactions leading to the inevitable end of his existence on earth.

Can man come out of his conditioning and act? Yes, only when he becomes aware of his conditioning. No one can help him to become aware. If he, as he performs his task can constantly observe his feelings with total attention and without any judgments over them he would become aware of his conditioning. The disintegrating thoughts understand and end themselves. Thus all his past falls off. His mind becomes innocent and fresh as just born. He finds love. He does not distinguish between man and man. He sees all as himself – oneself. For him the whole existence is that single self getting

presently shattered into pieces due to hatred. With his newly found love he re-establishes peace on this earth.

It is time that the ‘Heads of powerful nations’ taking full cognition of their obligations towards the global peace strongly observe, advocate the principle of peaceful co-existence. As the first step they should take the lead and bring all the Heads of Nations without exception for a frank discussion on this scheme.

When the ‘Heads of Nations’ collectively become aware of their conditioned minds their passionate look at the impending collapse of the mankind would evolve a fresh set of activities bringing an end to the sufferings of the deprived, thus bringing an end to extremism.

Use your mind, for a change

Some of you might know that we sell several things at CafePress, a site for tee shirts and the like. I did some updating, and then searched “Zen.” One tee shirt that came up had a slogan I loved:

Then, I received the following question from Karen, one of our readers:

I enjoy receiving your blog and articles. I would be interested to get your perspective on “Law of Attraction” philosophy that some life coaches use.

I wrote back:

Thanks for your note and question. Being a quasi-Zen-guy, I believe in Karma, which is actually a pretty neat cause-and-effect philosophy. Simply, what I put out there (how I think, to some extent, but crucially, what I DO) enters a Karmic feedback loop.

In other words, where I am right now (to paraphrase the Buddha) “…is a result of what I have thought [and done.]“)

If I do not like my reality [my present moment] the only thing I can do is change what I can change—the way I act (which includes how I respond to my habitual patterns of thought—the actual thought patterns do not change!)

Rather than thinking, “I am a failure,” and acting as a failure, a Zen approach would be “Here I am, as usual, thinking I am a failure. I will “feel” the emotion that arises, fully, and then I will act in such a way as to bring about a different experience.”

I kind of amuse myself over the Power of Attraction stuff. While there is some truth to all of it, most of the ‘biggies’ seem to use it to pile on money and possessions. This seems to work [typically they make money selling Power of Attraction stuff...] but seems to me a poor marker of deep and meaningful living. Nonetheless, we all attract exactly what we believe we will attract.

I didn’t want to get into a “Power of Attraction” (POA) bashing thing, as this seems counter productive. The irony here is that POA and Karma pretty much say the same thing. In other words, Karma is all about reaping what you sow—If you “put out” fear and insecurity, you’ll get more of it from others, and the world. If you act as Zorba the Buddha, (an OSHO idea–that one could be both fully engaged in the world, and fully spiritual) then the world is both a playground and a classroom.

Mine is bigger than yours!

The problem I see with people getting hooked on POA is that it tends to use “stuff” as a marker–get your thinking straight, and you’ll make money, attract houses and cars, and you’ll “be happy.”

As we endlessly say, having such markers is actually THE problem. As soon as I measure my “success” by the height of the pile of crap I surround myself with, I get caught in the addiction to stuff.

Karma and POA as a Mind Adventure

1) Watch Your Mind

Sitting Zazen (meditating) is a key practice for changing your mind. I’ve written about this extensively, so go to the online version of this article, and type “zazen” into the search box at the top of the right column. Or, read this article.

Mind-watching is all about simply noticing what’s going on up there. Most of us either ignore our thinking process (letting it happen automatically and out of consciousness—which is why we end up repeating stupid behaviours) or try to stop them. Neither of these approaches lead anywhere.

So, just watch. Notice the games, notice the aversions and attractions. Just notice. Gently.

2) Accept the Reality of Karma

Part of the “watching of mind” is noticing what you expect to happen. Listen to yourself talking to yourself–predicting the outcome of whatever you are thinking about. Because we predict it, we predispose ourselves to get that, and only that!

Karma works two ways.

First, if you act with disrespect or anger or jealousy, you will find yourself surrounded by people and situations that are what you put out there. The results you are getting—the way your life is—is the direct result of what you set in motion, 100% of the time.

Second, your mind’s main function is to filter. For example, open your ears right now, and listen to everything happening around you. You’ll likely hear stuff that you were unaware of. Your mind decided that this stuff was unimportant, so it didn’t “register” on your consciousness. Your mind also filters results, by only bringing what you expect to see into consciousness.

So, if you think, “My husband is a jerk, and he will fail again,” you will only notice his jerkiness and failures. You see only what you are looking for.

Instead, shift your expectation and your behaviour, so that the two match, and are clear and precise. Put into the world what you want to take out of it.

3) Take charge of your expectations

This was the point of the series that ended last week. I gave you exercises to do that help you to make conscious choices, that answer the question, “What do you REALLY want?”

Part of Zen Mind is a simple awareness that everything about your behaviour in the world is under your control, as are your judgements about meaning.

If you learn to focus on the step-by-step path toward your goals, you can listen to your mind babbling about failure, and doom and gloom, and have a laugh. As you bring awareness to your games, they become what they are—the fears and insecurities of your inner 6-year-old.

4) Change a habit

We are creatures of habit—far more then we realize—and habits operate on the sub-conscious level. Brain theorists suggest that habits are actually hard-wired neural pathways in our brain. Thus, a stimulus comes in, and we follow a pre-ordained path, even if we say it’s a path we would rather not follow.

The only way out is paying attention—being present. For now, pick something you want to shift. Darbella and I, several months ago, decided to work on stopping complaining. We got “Complaint Free World” wrist bands, and worked on it steadily (it takes 25 days to change a habit/rewire your brain’s neural pathway) I wrote about it in an article on cleansing. (Specifically, point 6)

After picking something, figure out what sets the thing in motion, and pledge to yourself to begin to notice when that happens. Decide in advance what the new behaviour will be, and implement it. Do this 100% of the time for 25 days. If you blow it (you will!) start the day count over again.

6) Be Zorba

OSHO had it right. He defined the problem in East/West terms. In the West, we use externals, piles, wealth and power as markers of development.

As good little Puritans, we fail to remember pleasure, sensuality, etc. These things are essential, and equate to Zorba’s insistence on deeply diving into the pleasures of life.

Start with Zorba–decide which things you want to immerse yourself in, own the experiences you want to have, and consciously choose to make them happen. Devote time to tasting, hearing, seeing, touching–drinking in the essence of life.

6) Be the Buddha

We return here–to zazen–to simply sitting, with presence and verve.

In the East, the focus has been internal–on spiritual development, and on denial of self, celibacy, austerity, poverty. This is the Buddha side.

“The secret of health for both mind and body is not to mourn for the past, worry about the future, or anticipate troubles, but to live in the present moment wisely and earnestly.” ~ Buddha

” Just as treasures are uncovered from the earth, so virtue appears from good deeds, and wisdom appears from a pure and peaceful mind. To walk safely through the maze of human life, one needs the light of wisdom and the guidance of virtue.” ~ Buddha

Zorba the Buddha owns the best of both “worlds.” He drinks deeply from the stream of the world, imbibing life fully. He also spends his days deepening his sense of self. He calls us to live fully, to love deeply, to develop Zen Mind, and to free our hearts and spirits.

Nothing good, nothing bad, but thinking made it so. Lack, deprivation, are mind states that lead nowhere but to misery.

Instead, act in keeping with your passions, desires, and with virtue, directness and a gentle spirit.

The details will look after themselves.

So I am studying for a final exam for law school.  Listening to old quiz questions that I made into a pdf and I have Adobe reading them out loud to me. I think this might be the smartest and most convenient way to read stuff that you may never have read prior. For example, I use this method to read The Wall Street Journal, which I would never read otherwise, but makes me feel cool to say “oh yeah, I read The Wall Street Journal today and there was an article in there on investing in the movie industry and how it only cost 10 grand to make that one ghost movie done entirely with a night vision camcorder, but somehow it earned 0 million dollars.”

There is an abundant stream of free flowing free content everywhere you turn and now I hear The New York Times, as well as numerous musicians and other publications are also going free.  Information wants to be free.  People are still managing to monetize this content through the use of Google ad-sense, pay per click, and referral affiliate programs.  All this also has a feel of being so revolutionary..like on edge…like it won’t last for ever because it’s in a state of constant change.

It can get a bit daunting, but…..I have a prediction for the future

I was watching Book TV because I like boring things and I am a depressing boring turtle, snail, Eeyore of a person and as I was watching the paint dry and watching book TV they were televising a national publisher conference where these five old white men and one middle aged white woman spoke on the future of the book publishing industry (I only make note of their sex and race, because the woman actually took the time to make note of it, as an ironic but real representation of the still hegemonic fraternal nature of the publishing industry).

The woman noted that currently e-books make up 10% of published books, but how they estimate in about 5 years e-books will make up about 60% of published works.

here is my prediction

I don’t own an iPad (yet), or a Kendle. I don’t know all of the names for all of these ebook readers, but you don’t have to be Steven Hawkin to understand the appeal of reading an e-book over hand-held text. Even with the capacity to have links in text and videos on the same screen as the page you are reading, and the ability to impose ads on the page, allowing publishers to make the actual content free, there will always be the debate over whether or not hand-held text is better than this modern-form of reading. I predict what will end this conversation, or at least give it a numbing and halting blow to the jejunum, will be the moment e-books become cross-national through a self translating system.

We already see something like this with social networks and Wikipedia in how you can translate the text on a given page to fit your language of choice.  There is not much else for me to rant about. This is a pretty simple self-explanatory concept.  Google Translator obviously has glitches, and even Adobe’s pdf reader re-siting my contract law quiz questions to me, RIGHT NOW, is not exactly fluid in its pronunciation or even coherent at times, but the technology is getting more refine, soon the organs will be robotic and we won’t know whether the enemy is Skynet or The Resistance.

I think the goal of every author, or creator of some form of art, wants their work to reach as many people as possible. In the past, the capability to cross over boundaries has been the one upper-hand art, photography, and languages like math and music has had on the writing industry, but when it becomes standard for e-books to be pre-translatable into every possible language, I don’t think this will be a barrier anymore. And when this happens hand held publications as mundane and meaningless as a Reader’s Digest will be treated like sacred relics.
